What does the future hold for social media platforms and enthusiasts? At the beginning of this decade, many seasoned marketers labeled the limited field of fledgling social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as passing fads that were not to be taken seriously. More recent additions to the social media scene – Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat – were mere twinkles in the eyes of some creative and entrepreneurial visionaries whose time had not yet come. Perhaps they, too, were watching and waiting to see if the social media phenomenon really had legs and would firmly take root in contemporary society.
As we take another step closer to the onset of the next decade, however, social media has become even more entrenched in our cultural fabric and moreover, a part of our day-to-day lives. Does a day go by when you don’t check your Twitter feed, or scan your LinkedIn homepage or take a quick peek at your Facebook page? Social media has eased the tedium of commuting for many in recent years. During the relatively short lifespan of today’s social networking sites, we’ve born witness to many changes. Just this past year, for example, Twitter eased its character restrictions and now allows users to retweet their own posts in an effort to make its service more appealing and user-friendly.
How will the social media revolution continue to evolve in 2017? The time-tested adage, “The more things change, the more they stay the same” will continue to ring true in the coming months. With the help of my trusty crystal ball, here’s a preview of some social media trends that you can look forward to next year:

Seek out opportunities to broadcast and share video snippets of your event using free mobile applications such as Periscope.
